If you're reading this then you most likely have a loved one or a friend taking their first steps in joining the military. Odds are you've already written them lots but are worried that you're being repetitive in your letters and/or losing their interest. Or maybe you just want to send them something more. Let me start off by saying that your stories won't bore them or lose their interest. Getting your letters is going to be one of their favorite parts of boot camp.
But if you would still like to send them a little something extra, here are a few ideas that I am sure they'll love:
Pictures
Sending your loved one photos will be one of the best thing you can send. While my husband was in boot camp, I sent him pictures of myself, our pets, and photos of the two of us on our wedding day. I didn't send these all at once though. I had ordered about six photos and would send him one or two a week until I had ran out. I ordered them 4 x 4 but still had to trim them just the slightest bit to make them fit in the envelope. Polaroids would also be a great idea for a small photo to send.
Drawings
Another thing my husband said he really liked that I sent him was my drawings. Now you may be thinking "Oh, well, I can't draw so they won't want that." Hush. You do not have to be da Vinci or Michelangelo to send them something that will brighten their day. A stick man being blown away in the wind while holding an umbrella could bring a smile to their face. Honestly I think out of all the things I sent my husband, an outline of my hand was one of his favorites. An outline. Of my hand. so there's no need to be a skilled artist, either way I'm sure they'll be happy with what you send.
Inspiration
Think about it, your loved one is in a strange place they've never been, around people they don't know well, and getting yelled at quite a lot of the time for this, that, and the other. So they could probably really use some uplifting words. You could use empowering scriptures from the Bible, motivating quotes, or you could even just say something positive like "There's only x amount of days til you graduate." Or "You're doing so well, can't wait to see you again." Things of that nature.
A Card
A card can be most of these thing wrapped up into one. It's something cute, that has a nice saying, and in addition you can write them on there too. It's a little something to switch things up a bit from the usual letters and what-nots. DO NOT GET ONE THAT MAKES NOISE. Last thing you want is to send them something that will get them into trouble. Also wouldn't recommend a pop up, but I don't see why that would get them into trouble with the MTL's. Just maybe a few laughs from others. But any cute or funny card that makes you think of them will do.
All in all, the best thing that you can send them is something from you. They'll love any and everything from you. I hope that this was able to help stir around some new ideas for you. Graduation will be here before you know it, and seeing them will feel like the absolute best thing in the world. And they'll be thinking the same about seeing you again. Good luck on your writing!
